Mustari Wins Elite 125 Bracket At Cowboy Open :: Hopkin and DePaolo Both Finish Second

Greeley, COLO. - The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team got its season underway today at the annual Cowboy Open, hosted by the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Sophomore Tony Mustari won the title at 125-pounds, while senior heavyweight Reece Hopkin finished second in the elite heavyweight division and freshman Rocco Depaolo was second in the amateur 141-pound division.

Mustari started the day with a 6-0 decision over Cody Grant from Wyoming. He then won a 6-4 decision over Forrest Bouge of Great Falls, won a 7-0 decision in the semifinals over Nebraska-Kearney's Joey Morrison and won 7-5 in overtime over Ben Kjar of Utah Valley State.

Hopkin received a bye in the first round and in the second round, posted a major decision over Boise State's Sam Zylstra, 10-1. In the quarterfinals, he pinned Willie Weber, competing unattached, in 3:03, while in the semifinals Hopkin won by a pin over Oregon's Charlie Alexander in 2:41. In the finals, he lost by a major decision to Tervel Diagnev of Nebraska Kearney, 16-6.

Redshirt freshman DePaolo eventually lost in the finals to teammate Lance Gallegos who was competing unattached, 9-7. DePaolo also received a bye in the first round before winning by a major decision over Gilbert Garcia, 19-5 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Anthoni Heffernan 7-2 and won a decision over Adam Almaguer 8-1 in the semifinals.

Next week, the Bears will host the sixth-annual Old Chicago's Northern Colorado Open in Butler-Hancock on Sunday, Nov. 18. Action is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
