1949 UNC Baseball Team
The 1949 UNC Baseball Team became the seventh team overall and second UNC baseball squad inducted into the University of Northern Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame on September 20, 2003. Under the direction of head coach Pete Butler, the 1949 baseball squad finished the season with a 17-3 record and advanced to the NCAA Regionals. UNC was near perfect in the regular season, tallying a 16-1 record and perfect 8-0 Rocky Mountain Conference mark, as the team won its eighth consecutive RMC Championship. Their lone loss during the regular season was a 10-6 defeat at the hands of Wyoming. The Bears advanced to the NCAA Region 7 Playoffs to take on the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The Trojans took game one by a 12-2 margin thanks to the arm of Harry Wise, the Bears team was able to take game two 6-2 and force a third and decisive affair. In game three, Wise was still on the mound at the end of the sixth inning and UNC had a 7-0 lead. But after pitching in back-to-back games, Wise could go no longer and Butler had to reach into his bullpen. Unfortunately for the Bears, USC rallied and won 8-7 to advance to the College World Series. For his outstanding performance during the season, Wise was named a third team All-American. |
