Jackson Field - Home of the Northern Colorado Baseball Bears

Located at the corner of 18th St. and 6th Ave. in Greeley, Jackson Field has served as a home away from home for the Northern Colorado Bears. Located two blocks from Central Campus, the facility has has seen its share of big games and upsets over the years.

The field was named after Charles N. Jackson, a UNC trustee who helped purchase the land in 1927. The complex also contains Jackson Stadium that was home to the Bears football team from 1926 to 1994. The venue will get a new tenant in 2006, when the renovated stadium becomes home to the Northern Colorado women's soccer team.

The field has been the host site for eight NCAA District 7 Playoff series, as Northern Colorado appeared in an impressive five series during the 1950s, including four in a row (1954-57) and once again in 1959. Jackson Field also served as host in 1962, 1966 and the memorable year of 1974.

The 1974 playoff saw a David versus Goliath story, as the Bears hosted No. 1 ranked and heavily favored Arizona. A feat deemed impossible by many was overcome by 21 players wearing blue and gold. In back-to-back days, college baseball history was made, as Northern Colorado defeated the Wildcats 6-5 and 6-2 to pull the upset and advance to the 1974 College World Series, its 10th CWS appearance all-time. A record crowd of over 2,500 fans saw each of the Bears' games against Arizona that year. That 1974 baseball team was inducted into the Northern Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Bears have won over 300 games at Jackson Field since 1980 and had a winning record in 20 of 26 seasons since that year, including the last four years. Three times in that period the program has won 20 or more games at home, first coming in 1994 when the Bears won 23 games and then once again the following year when the team won 20 times. In the first year under head coach Kevin Smallcomb, the Bears won 24 games and posted an impressive .706 winning percentage. A year later the team won 71.4 percent of its games and holds a 52-24 (.684) record under Smallcomb in three seasons at Jackson Field. The team had a 14-game winning streak at home in 2003, and entering the 2005 season, the Bears have won 13 of its last 18 games at Jackson.

The 2003 team not only made Jackson Field but NCAA history when they scored 31 runs en route to a 31-9 victory over in-state rival Metro State on April 8. In that game, the Bears set or tied 18 school or NCAA records and ranked in the top 10 in 10 national statistical categories with the win. UNC set the NCAA record for total bases in an inning (35) and tied records for home runs in an inning (6), hits in an inning (15) and grand slams in an inning (2) by scoring 18 times in the seventh inning to break the game wide-open.

Jackson Field, which has been the site for Bears baseball since the late 1920s, is moving toward expansion as the program continues its reclassification back to Division I. In fall 2004, the venue got a new infield surface and improvements were made to the outfield. Other plans for improvement are in the works as the Greeley Grays, a college summer league team, began play in the venue in summer 2005. Future improvements for the field include lights and an improved visitor's dugout among other things.
